Lady Red Devil hoops sweeps competition at Flaming Gorge Classic

Posted

EVANSTON — It was a good extended weekend of basketball for the Lady Red Devils and their Uinta County counterparts, the Lyman Lady Eagles and the Mountain View Lady Buffs. Combined, the three teams posted a record of  10-0 against the competition in the 24th annual Flaming Gorge Classic basketball tournament, staged in six gymnasiums in Green River and Rock Springs, Dec. 13-15.

Lyman and Mountain View picked up wins against Class 4A competition. The Lady Eagles played four games in three days and dispatched  Rock Springs, Green River, Jackson and Riverton in double-digit wins. The highlight of the tournament may very well have been the 44-point performance by Lady Eagle senior and future Wyoming Cowgirl McKinley Bradshaw vs. Green River on Friday. The Lady Eagles are 6-1, with their lone loss to arch rival Mountain View in the Bridger Valley tournament on Dec. 8.

The Lady Buffs are an unblemished 6-0 after recording three wins against Riverton, Jackson and Green River. The game against the host Lady Wolves to end the tourney was a hard-fought, close win, 57-54. The victories against Riverton and Jackson were blowouts of 36 points or more.

The Lady Red Devils of Evanston are 5-1 on the early season after notching wins against Rawlins, Riveton and an overtime victory against Pinedale. Evanston defeated the Lady Outlaws 44-36 on Thursday, knocked off the Lady Wolverines, 51-40, on Friday and outlasted the Lady Wranglers, 53-46, in OT.

Evanston has predicated its efforts on defense, but the offense started to come together during the tournament in Sweetwater County, in particular against Rawlins, with nine Lady Red devils reaching the scoring column.

Natalie Robbins and Zocia Nowakowski emerged to demonstrate offensive prowess to join Ajahonna Archuleta and Kori Deru as scoring weapons in the team’s final two games. Robbins poured in 17 against Riverton and Nowakowski contributed 11, while Archuleta and Deru finished with nine and eight points, respectively.

Robbins and Nowakowski each scored 14 and Deru netted 10 points in the overtime win against Pinedale, which was deadlocked at 44 apiece at the end of regulation.

Evanston will next play four games in three days during the Star Valley Shoot-Out, Dec. 27-29.
