Lady Devils swim team opens 2020 season

Posted

The 2020 swimming and diving season is off to a solid start for the EHS Lady Devils, with strong showings at last week’s Rawlins Quad, as well as a dual meet against Green River Tuesday at Davis Middle School.

“I think that we have had a great start to the season,” said first-year EHS head coach Kendra Asay. “Our first meet, I had a girl who was really close to qualifying for state, and another girl who swam a personal best. Then yesterday [Tuesday], we had four more girls swim personal bests. It’s been a really good start to the season.”

Rawlins Quad

The Lady Devils went 2-1 at Friday’s duals in Rawlins, with wins over Worland (119-61) and host Rawlins (117-63). Evanston fell to Lyman 103-74.

“The girls had really positive attitudes going into Rawlins,” Asay said. “A few of them had great times, and ones that didn’t do quite as well as they would have liked still had a really great outlook. They were really positive about the whole thing.”

The 200 freestyle relay team of Amelia Lester, Kyndall Fernandez, Emily Sawyer and Tayler Davis won the event, with a time of 2:01.57, narrowly beating the team from Lyman, who swam a 2:01.65.

“That was very exciting for them, they were very happy to get that,” Asay said. “That was a big boost for the team. They really did well.”

Lady Devil freshman Kyndall Fernandez finished in the top spot of the 100 butterfly, with a time of 1:18.52; teammate Teghan Hoff was third in the event, with a time of 1:23.20. Kyndall also placed third in the 50 freestyle, with a time of 30.28.

Other top finishers include Addyson Fernandez (second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:45.88), Tayler Davis (second in diving, with a score of 140.05, and third in the 100 freestyle), Brooke Phillips (fourth in the 500 free, with a time of 6:36.68) and Emily Sawyer (second in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 1:26.62).

Amelia Lester swam a personal best in the 100 backstroke, with a time of 1:28.06.

“My main goal for that meet was no disqualifications,” Asay said. “There weren’t any, so that was a great start, always a plus.”

Green River

Evanston welcomed Green River to Davis Middle School Tuesday for the Lady Devils’ first home dual of the season. The Lady Wolves swept the meet, but the home team performed well, according to Asay.

“There were a lot of great things in this meet,” Asay said. “Kyrie Worthing swam a PR in the 200 freestyle, Emily Sawyer in the 200 IM, Jocelyn Roper in the 200 IM and Brooke Phillips in the 100 butterfly.”

The Lady Devils have a pair of divers for the first time in a while, with Tayler Davis finishing fifth with a score of 136.65. Teammate Kyrie Worthing was sixth, with a score of 130.15, a huge improvement from the Rawlins meet.

“It’s such a big benefit to have those divers and get those points,” Asay said. “Kyrie scored a 110 in the first meet, and at yesterday [Tuesday’s] meet, got a score of 130. That’s a lot of points to gain from one meet to the next. Tayler’s score was right around what it was for the first meet, and just having those points helps the team score so much. You can tell in those girls’ faces what they’re passionate about. That’s what they love. Seeing that passion come out in them is so invigorating and gratifying.”

Addyson Fernandez placed second in the 200 IM, and fourth in the 100 backstroke. Emily Sawyer placed second in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 1:26.62, while Jocelyn Roper was fifth in the 200 freestyle. Brooke Phillips finished fourth in the 500 freestyle, with a time of 6:36.68.

In the relay events, the team of Teghan Hoff, Brooke Phillips, Tayler Davis and Addyson Fernandez finished second in the 200 freestyle relay, with a time of 2:08.31. The team of Amelia Lester, Emily Sawyer, Brooke Phillips and Jocelyn Roper placed second in the 400 freestyle relay, posting a time of 5:05.35.

The Lady Devils are on the road Friday at the Green River Quad, with meets to follow next week. Asay said the girls are committed to improving with each meet.

“I had the girls write down what their goals were for the season and turn it into me,” Asay explained. “I read through them to see what their goals were, and a lot of them either want to get their personal best times, or qualify for state. So that’s another reason why I talk about their PRs and state qualifying times — it’s what these girls want to do, that’s their goal for the season.”
