EVANSTON — The Lady Devils’ soccer team said goodbye to seniors Brenda Casas, Falynn Mackey, Hannah Davis, Micah Harvey, Bronwyn Payne, Anahi Escalante and Lupe Ayon on Friday, May 4, during the team’s final home match against Jackson. The emotional send-off followed another tough loss for the girls.
The EHS team took the field with energy and had their first scoring opportunity in the first minutes of the match. However, Jackson soon took control and kept the Lady Devils chasing the ball for the majority of the game.
Jackson dominated possession early in the match and almost took an early lead in the 14th minute but the goal by Sophie Delahaye was deemed offside. Evanston had another opportunity about 20 minutes in but failed to capitalize.
The two teams left the field scoreless at the halftime break.
That 0-0 draw didn’t last long after the ladies returned, as Holland Gaston scored for Jackson in just the fifth minute. Lauren Hiatt tried to even the match up with 25:20 on the clock, but her shot went high over the goal.
Less than a minute later, Holland Gastron got her second goal of the match, giving Jackson a 2-0 lead. The Devils continued to chase the ball but some tentative play and loss of stamina worked against the girls.
A third Jackson goal by Annabel Hagen secured the 3-0 win for Jackson.
Head coach Chuck Grenfell said the girls continued to be limited due to injury, but added, “The girls continue to play hard and get better with each game.”
Grenfell is hopeful that some injured players may return this week in time to contribute during the Devils’ 4A West Regional tournament matchup on Thursday, May 10, when they will be facing Jackson yet again. He said it is doubtful that anyone on the injured list will be back at 100 percent, but they may be able to get in some playing time and contribute.
The girls will face off against Jackson at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Wolves Stadium in Green River.
