Lady Buffalos fire on all cylinders in win against Kemmerer

MOUNTAIN VIEW — Jessica Moretti believes her team has been a bit sluggish in its last few games.

But the Mountain View High School girls’ basketball coach also believes that Wednesday’s non-conference game against Kemmerer could have given the Lady Buffalos the spark they have been looking for to get back on the right track.

Haily Stephens scored a game-high 21 points to lead four Mountain View players in double figures as the Lady Buffalos cruised to a 74-22 win against the Class 2A Lady Rangers.

“We executed the offense, for sure,” Moretti said. “In the last couple of games, I felt like we hadn’t quite gotten all of those little pieces together that we needed to, especially out of the zone. We were able to get it inside the paint when we needed to, and we were able to hit some outside shots, too. I thought the offensive execution was great tonight.

“The way we shot in the second half, that’s how we shot in December. I feel like we’ve kind of been in a little bit of a lull the last few games. It was nice to see it all come back together tonight.”

Stephens scored 16 of her points in the third quarter, the same quarter Mountain View outscored Kemmerer 33-8. During that frame, the sophomore guard knocked down three 3-pointers, two jumpers and a freethrow.

“That first half I was really struggling,” Stephens said. “I couldn’t really make any of my shots. In the second half (coach Moretti) told me to keep my head up and keep shooting.”

Mountain View senior Baylee Tims finished with 14 points while juniors Ailee Bugas and Charity Harmon both had 11 to lead the Lady Buffalos, who improved to 10-4 on the year.

“We were moving the ball around an appropriate amount,” Tims said. “We weren’t just coming down the court and shooting it. We were working hard to get where we needed to be and shooting it in the right situations.”

Mountain View, the No. 5-ranked team in Class 3A, jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter and held a 25-11 advantage going into the break. The Lady Buffalos outscored Kemmerer 33-8 in the third and 16-3 in the final period.

“We communicated well, and we trusted each other to guard how we needed to,” Tims said. “I think we did well working as a team.”

Taylor Brunski, the fifth-leading scoring in Class 2A coming in to Wednesday’s contest at 14 points per game, was held to just four.

The Lady Rangers were averaging 31.4 points as a team.

“(Brunski) is a great player,” Moretti said. “Haylee Hereford did an excellent job on her defensively. We kind of took her out of her game, and she’s a lot of their offense. Defensively, we manned up the whole game and didn’t allow them to have many open shots.”

Mountain View will look to keep the momentum in its favor when the Lady Buffalos host Big Piney at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Following Saturday’s game, Mountain View has five regular-season games remaining before regional play begins March 1 in Pinedale.

“I definitely think the best is yet to come,” Tims said. “We’re getting there, but we’re not at our best yet.”
