Girls finish in 12th place in Casper

Posted

Lady Red Devils who qualified and competed at state were Tia Nelson, Gabby Hall, Reghan Worley, Breila Fuller, Tayler Groll, Zocia Nowakowski, Taryn Holt, Kaelyn Hiatt, Amber Lowe, Lexi Demander and Victoria Lange, in individual events and/or as part of a relay team.

The Lady Red Devils ended in 12th place at the state meet in the Wyoming Class 4A field of thirteen teams with 14 total points.

Senior Tayler Groll was the first to qualify for the finals in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.86 seconds. She posted a mark of 17.36 seconds in the finals to garner eighth-place at state and notch a point in the Lady Red Devil total. Groll contributed an additional four points with a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles, carving out a time of 48.68 seconds.

The only other individual to score points for Evanston was Breila Fuller. The junior raced to a seventh-place ending with a time of 2:20.25, which added a deuce to the Lady Red Devil team tally.

In the 1600-meter sprint medley, the team of Lange, Demander, Groll and Fuller tallied five team points with a time of 4:24.71, securing fourth-place honors.

The Lady Red Devils’ final two points came via a seventh-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 4:14.50.

Like the Red Devils, the girls had ended up in fourth-place in the 4A West Regional track meet on May 11 and 12, but coach Barker explained that neither team was going to have an opportunity to score a lot of points at state, in part, due to team depth.

“We placed our focus on to the relays and that worked out quite well. It’s also a way to build team camaraderie in an individual-based sport like track and field happens to be,” Barker said.

The coach continued, referring to both his boys’ and girls’ squads.

“Our kids worked their tails off all season long and got better as the season progressed. Many posted their personal bests at regionals and state,” he said, “and we can’t ask for anything more than that.”

The Evanston track and field teams will forego the customary awards dinner and follow suit with a new tradition which they began last year. They will rent one of the theaters at Aspen Cinemas and hand out their season-ending awards on site. The Herald will provide a future story on the award winners.
