George S. Phillips was born on May 10, 1930, and died on June 13, in Evanston, following a long illness.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Julie Phillips; multiple nieces and nephews and many good friends.
His wife, Joan, preceded him in death, along with his parents, Sylvester and Florence Phillips; and a sister, Jean Workman.
George graduated from Rock Springs High School in 1947. He played basketball and participated in track. He was a proud Wyoming Cowboy and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1953, with a degree in geology. He ran the hurdles in track and field for the Cowboys as well.
He joined the Navy shortly after graduation. He was a pilot and served in Vietnam. He had a successful Navy career and retired with the rank of captain. He was the commanding officer of Barber’s Point and Moffet Field Naval air stations in Hawaii and California. He was the Navy attaché to Thailand and headed the drug and alcohol rehabilitation program at Pearl Harbor.
Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked as an executive for TRW in California until 2003, when he retired to spend time with Joan and family.
Although he traveled the world with the Navy, he was always a Wyomingite at heart. He was a skilled fly fisherman and each year would return home to spend a couple of weeks fishing.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Parish in Los Altos, California. He proudly served with the “gardening ministry” at the church and many shrubs and flowers owe their beauty to his good work.
