Final game of the season for Red Devils

EVANSTON — Today’s  home matchup at 6 p.m. against Jackson will be the last one for this year’s  Evanston High School football team after the Red Devils were eliminated from the playoffs last week after suffering a 14-0 loss to Worland.

But Evanston head coach Pat Fackrell believes the Red Devils still have a lot to play for.

“You want to win every game, but this one is very meaningful to the seniors because it is their last one,” Fackrell said on Wednesday. “And it’s just kind of a stepping stone for the upcoming season.

“I hope it motivates young kids to get in the weight room and get bigger, faster and stronger. My biggest hope is our seniors can leave on a positive  note and be proud of the work they did this year.”

Jackson (0-7, 0-5 3A WEST) is riding a 13-game losing streak and is coming off a 62-44 loss in Week 8 to Green River. The Broncos have been outscored 329-100 and have been shut out twice this season.

Fackrell said it is of the upmost importance not to overlook a team like the Broncos.

“If you overlook a team like that, they become very dangerous,” Fackrell said. “I think Jackson has a lot to prove. When you watch them on film, if they didn’t have a few bad breaks every game, they’d be in every football game.”

Jackson is ranked ninth in team offense with 276 yards per game. The Broncos are allowing 341.6 yards per game and are ranked 11th in team defense.

Jeydon Cox leads the Jackson offense with 711 yards on 151 carries and six touchdowns. Cox also has four catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns. Fellow running back Kirby Castagno has run for 594 yards on 149 carries with four rushing scores.

“We have to tackle well. We have to stay within our scheme,” Fackrell said. “(Cox) is very elusive and makes a lot of guys miss.”

Quarterback Pearson Evans has completed 29 of 65 passes for 373 yards with four touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Madden Hart has 11 receptions for 132 yards and Frank Thomas has caught 10 passes for 107 yards and a score. Ted McDaniel rounds out the Broncos’ leading receivers with five catches for 62 yards and a touchdown.

“They’re very capable,” Fackrell said. “They move the ball well. They’re very unique in what they do. They’re very different then the teams we’ve seen, so we have to go out and play our style and try to get off the field defensively.”

The Red Devils, who have been outscored 175-108, were shut out for the first time last week and turned the ball over four times in crucial situations.

The Red Devils are ranked 11th in Class 3A at 229.3 yards per game. Defensively, they are ranked 10th after allowing 322.4 yards per game.

Junior running back Tyus Cornia leads the Evanston offense with 658 yards on 127 carries with eight touchdowns.

Junior quarterback Seth Lloyd is 39 of 88 through the air for 482 yards with four touchdowns and five interceptions.

Brenden Mathson has 12 catches for 183 yards and a score. Hunter Groll has 10 receptions for 142 yards and Kody Smith has six catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead Evanston receivers.

Hunter Groll is second on the team, behind Cornia, in all-purpose offense with 76.9 yards per game.

“You want to leave as a senior on a positive note,” Fackrell said. “The juniors and sophomores are looking at getting off on the right foot for next season.”
