EVANSTON — Larry Wagstaff isn’t too concerned about members of his team eating large meals during the holiday break.
The veteran wrestling coach is more concentrated on keeping the Red Devils in shape before their next match on Jan. 5 at Green River.
“We don’t cut (weight) too hard,” Wagstaff said on Wednesday. “That takes care of itself through hard work. The big thing you’re concerned about is conditioning. If you don’t have lungs, you can’t go the distance. That’s what we’ll be working on — keeping their lungs and working on technique.”
Evanston will hold nine practices during the 13-day holiday break. The Red Devils are hoping to keep the momentum going after they had 10 wrestlers score points in a 50-21win on the road on Tuesday against Highland (Utah).
“We wrestled pretty good against that team,” Wagstaff said. “They wrestled hard. It was good to end 2017 with a win. Hopefully we’ll carry that over into next year.”
Wagstaff is optimistic about where the Red Devils stand now, but he knows there is still room for growth.
“We’re improving,” he said. “We still have a lot of work to do, a long ways to go. But the kids are putting in the time and effort.”
