EVANSTON — A Utah woman was arrested in Evanston last week on felony charges of burglary, possession of stolen property, and being a fugitive from justice, as well as other misdemeanor charges. Amy L. Mickelsen, of Taylorsville, Utah, was apprehended following two thefts in the area of Evanston High School.
Evanston Police Chief Jon Kirby said the first theft occurred on Wednesday, Nov. 1. A player on the EHS volleyball team went to her car, which was parked in the lot of the LDS church adjacent to the high school, and discovered that it had been broken into. The student’s personal belongings had been stolen, including her wallet, debit cards, cash, clothing and her volleyball uniform and bag.
Later, during that night, a vehicle was stolen a few blocks away from the high school.
Kirby said officers were able to identify Mickelsen as one of two suspects through video surveillance from local businesses where the EHS student’s stolen debit card had been used, including Loaf and Jug, Kik’s Chevron, and Smith’s. The trail of debit card usage led investigators to the Super 8 Motel in Evanston, where Mickelsen and a male companion had a room.
When police went to the room, Mickelsen refused to answer the door, so an officer remained on-site to keep the room under surveillance until a warrant could be obtained. The male suspect was not at the motel at that point, although he returned and fled upon seeing law enforcement.
Kirby said after the warrant was issued and the room was entered, police were able to recover property allegedly stolen from both the EHS student’s vehicle and the stolen vehicle. The stolen vehicle itself was recovered undamaged near the Super 8. Additional stolen property was discovered in the garbage at the hotel.
Kirby said similar thefts have occurred in Sweetwater County and near Lander, and the pair may have been involved in those incidents as well. The male suspect has been identified but is still at large.
Local businesses were instrumental in helping to solve the case, said Kirby, both through video surveillance and determining what items were purchased with stolen property. The stolen debit card had been used to purchase gift cards at various businesses, which were activated using the names of the suspects. The police were able to recover about half of the EHS student’s stolen property and most of the property from the stolen vehicle.
