Evanston man charged in crash that killed passenger

EVANSTON — One Evanston man was killed and another charged with automobile homicide in his death following a rollover accident near the Wyoming-Utah border early on the morning of Friday, April 6.

According to a statement from the Utah Highway Patrol, a GMC pickup driven by 22-year-old Michael Wade Muller was involved in the fatal accident, which occurred following a night of drinking at Woodruff Narrows Reservoir.

The truck, holding seven people, was attempting to turn left from a dirt road onto SR-16 just over the Utah border. However, the truck ran the stop sign and “the driver attempted to enter too fast and rolled the pickup,” according to the UHP statement. The rear passenger, 23-year-old Richard L. Buderus, was ejected, pinned under the truck and killed.

Other occupants of the vehicle were transported to hospitals in both Evanston and Utah for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

Muller was taken to Evanston Regional Hospital prior to being booked into the Uinta County Detention Center. In an interview conducted at ERH, Muller reportedly told investigators he could remember going to the Narrows but had no recollection of leaving.

His field-administered sobriety test reportedly registered a blood alcohol content of .25 percent.

As the accident occurred just over the border, Muller is facing charges in both Wyoming and Utah. A statement from the Uinta County Sheriff’s Office said he is facing DUI charges in Wyoming and the homicide and possible other charges in Rich County, Utah.

As of press time, a hearing for Muller’s extradition to Utah is pending.
