EVANSTON – The Evanston girls golf team is in third place after Day 1 of the Class 4A state golf tournament on Monday at Purple Sage Golf Course.
The Lady Red Devils shot an opening-round 288 (+72).
Alexis Cornell is in third place after shooting an 89. Kyra Sponenburgh is tied for fifth after posting a 91 and Ally Hansen is tied for 20th with a 108.
The Evanston boys team is in third after posting a 340 on Monday.
Braxton Lind is in ninth place after shooting an opening-round 79, while Brady Hurd is tied for 11th with an 81. Dominic D’Anzi is tied for 29th with an 88, while Mason Ellingford is in 39th with a 92. Mason Smith is in 44th after posting a 98 to round out the top golfers for the Red Devils.
Kelly Walsh is dominating the field on the girls side after shooting a 255 as a team. Jacelyn Olson is the Day 1 leader after a shooting an 82. Barrett Lloyd is in second with an 84. Both golfers are from Kelly Walsh.
Natrona is in second with a 284, while Evanston (288), Thunder Basin (289) and Cheyenne Central (315) round out the top-five girls teams after Day 1.
The Kelly Walsh boys are in first after shooting an opening-day 313. Cheyenne Central (325), Sheridan (335) and Evanston (340) round out the top-five boys teams.
Blake Danni of East and Jordan James of Riverton lead the individual field after both golfers shot a 70 on Monday. Kirby Coe-Kirkham of Sheridan is in third with a 73, while Taj Sutherland (Kelly Walsh) and Brendan Cobb (Cheyenne Central) are tied for fifth after both shot a 77.
The tournament will conclude play today.
