GILLETTE — The Evanston High School girls’ swim team aims to swim faster at each meet.
The Class 4A state tournament was no different.
“We set goals for our girls to set personal bests, and we succeeded in that regard,” head coach Kate Schmidt said. “That’s all we ask for from the girls and state is no different.”
Every Evanston swimmer swam a personal best time during the preliminaries on Friday or the finals on Saturday as the Lady Red Devils finished 12th as a team with 24 points at the Aquatic Center in Gillette.
Laramie won the state championship with 258 points, while Sheridan (248) and Cheyenne Central (176) rounded out the top three teams.
The Lady Red Devils 400-yard freestyle relay team of Marie Davis, Rachel Buzarde, Jade Caves and McKinzey Camphouse finished eighth in 3:54.31. Evanston swam a 4:02.70 in the preliminary race on Friday.
Rachel Buzarde finished 10th in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:05.03. The freshman swam a 2:06.29 in the preliminary race.
Buzarde was also 10th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:35.70. She finished the race in 5:42.74 in the preliminaries on Friday.
Evanston junior McKinzey Camphouse finished ninth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.81 to help pace the Lady Red Devils.
Evanston’s 200-yard medley relay of Rebeca White, Heather Buzarde, Ozzy Ross and Charli Fadden was 11th in 2:15.43.
“Everyone swam really well,” Schmidt said. “In some cases, it just wasn’t enough for top 12.”
