Crowded fields in senate, governor and mayoral races

EVANSTON — The filing window has closed, and the slate of candidates is set for the upcoming primary election on Aug. 21. While some races have a packed field, others will feature only one candidate running unopposed.

U.S. Senator John Barrasso (R) is running for re-election and is facing a slew of Republican challengers, including Anthony Van Risseghem, Dave Dodson, John Holtz and Roque “Rocky” de la Fuente, whose mailing address on the Wyoming Secretary of State website is listed as San Diego, California. Crossover candidate Charlie Hardy, who switched party affiliations this year, will also be on the ballot as a Republican.

On the Democratic side, Gary Trauner is running unopposed and will face the winner of the Republican primary during the Nov. general election.

In the U.S. House of Representatives Liz Cheney is also up for re-election, facing Republican primary challengers Blake Stanley and Rod Miller. Democratic candidates for the U.S. House are Greg Hunter and Travis Helm, both of Laramie.

With term-limited Gov. Matt Mead not eligible to run for re-election, the Wyoming gubernatorial race is crowded, with 10 candidates having filed. The Republican ticket features Bill Dahlen, Sam Galeotos, Taylor Haynes, Harriet Hageman, social conservative millionaire Foster Friess and current Wyoming State Treasurer Mark Gordon. The Democratic primary will feature four candidates, including Kenneth Casner, Michael Green, Rex Wilde, and Mary Throne (looking to become Wyoming’s second woman governor).

In the Wyoming Secretary of State race, neither Republican Ed Buchanan nor Democrat James Byrd will face primary challengers and will face one another in November. Current Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow is running for re-election unopposed.

The Wyoming State Auditor race includes Republicans Kristi Racines and Nathan Winters, as well as Democrat Jeff Dockter. Republicans Curt Meier, Leland Christensen and Ron Redo are all vying to be Wyoming’s next state treasurer, a race in which no Democrats have filed.

Another crowded race is that for Wyoming State Senate District 15, in which incumbent Republican Sen. Paul Barnard has filed for re-election, facing primary challenges from Eugene Joyce, Jaraun Dennis, Shaun Sims and Evanston City Councilwoman Wendy Schuler.

In the Wyoming House of Representatives, incumbent Republican Tom Crank is facing a challenge from fellow Republican Scott Heiner in district 18, while incumbent Republican Danny Eyre faces Republican Karl Allred in district 19. In district 49, incumbent Republican Garry Piiparinen is running unopposed.

In local races, four candidates have filed for the two open positions on the Uinta County Commission, including incumbent Republicans Wendell Fraughton and Eric South. The two will face Republican Mark Anderson and Democrat Dave Tanner. Republican Jonny Pentz had filed paperwork but withdrew prior to the June 1 deadline.

Uinta County Coroner Greg Crandall (R) is running unopposed for re-election, as are Uinta County Attorney Loretta Howieson (R), Uinta County Clerk Amanda Hutchinson (R) and Uinta County Clerk of District Court Kerri Bumgardner Wright (R). Uinta County Sheriff Doug Matthews faces challenges from fellow Republicans Randy Chandler and Dennis Hutchinson.

Uinta County Treasurer Terry Brimhall is being challenged by fellow Republican Amber Minton, and Uinta County Assessor Lori Perkins by Maryl Thompson, both Republicans.

Evanston’s mayoral race is another crowded field with five candidates, including Evanston Mayor Kent Williams, former mayor Joy Bell, Michael Crichton, Brent Hatch and current Evanston City Councilman Evan Perkes.

Five newcomer candidates have filed for the one seat in Evanston City Council Ward 1, including Michael Odom, Deborah Demander Reno, Michael Searle, Mikal D. Welling and Kendra L. West. Tib Ottley is unopposed in Ward 2, while in Ward 3, councilman Dave Welling is running for re-election against Maurizio Mariotti.

Margaret Huggins and Brian Stokes are running for the two open positions on the Bear River Town Council.

Bronson Berg has filed for the position of Lyman Town Mayor, facing no challengers, and Tansy Shelton and Andrew Spray are running for the two positions on the Lyman Town Council. In Mountain View, Bryan Ayres, Sarah Butters and Jacob Rex Porter are vying for the two open positions on the town council.

Absentee ballots for the primary election are available on July 12, with absentee ballots for overseas citizens and those in the armed forces available on July 6. The general election will be held on Nov. 6.
