EHS holds hilarious assembly

Posted

EVANSTON — Students at Evanston High School spent the last hour on Dec. 21 participating in a hilarious assembly. Student Council members Maya Angwin, Kai Haukaas, Josie Dennis, Kyleigh Diaz, Willow LoRocco, Lexie Clark, and Priscilla Harmon had organized a make-a-wish merry Christmas celebration.

Earlier in the week, students gave their wishes to the student council and they did their best to grant them during the assembly. Council members wrote a Christmas story, which was read by Maya Angwin with Kai Haukaas and Josie Dennis as children all sitting beneath a decorated tree. At the opposite side of the stage, Santa Claus, played by EHS Principal Merle Lester, and Mrs. Claus, played by vice principal Scott Kohler, granted the wishes.

Wishes granted ranged from the absolutely ridiculous and funny to one girl receiving a song performed beautifully by sisters Kayli and Linzy Sharp. PE teacher Roy Barker received more than one pie in the face and he joyfully responded by giving the student, whose wish it was, a pie in her face as well. The audience appeared to love it as they cheered it on.

Other wishes included hugs, kisses, a lunch certificate for the whole year of 2019, a fairy dance, music teacher Heather Blackwell’s choir singing FaLaLa, clothes, a football, games, books, one student duct taping another student’s mouth shut, and much more. Students who had made wishes stood in line to the side of the auditorium with Mrs. Claus until their turn to have their wish granted.  One by one each of the wishes were granted.

One game devised by the council was to require three student volunteers to gift wrap a box in three minutes.  The one who ended up with the best gift wrap would win a prize. This turned into a hilarious performance by the male student who tried to sabotage the two girls’ attempts and even ended up turning a table over but still didn’t win.  One of the girls who quietly and methodically wrapped her box and ignored the young man’s attempts to distract her won the prize.

The assembly ended with many nice gifts, donated by the FFA club, being distributed randomly to audience members.   Students stood and waved their arms excitedly hoping to receive one of the gifts.

Teachers and students alike appeared to have a great time participating judging by their laughter and cheers. The last hour of school that day was certainly one to put all in a joyful spirit for the holiday vacation.
