Donated book honoring vets features Evanston man

EVANSTON — An Evanston man is one of more than 100 veterans included in the recently published “They Served With Honor: Stories from Wyoming Vietnam Veterans,” which a state official donated on Monday to the Uinta County Library in Evanston.

Ned Hill, who was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army during the Vietnam War, is featured in the book published by the Casper Star-Tribune.

The feature details Hill’s time in Vietnam when he was in charge of Class 1 supply, overseeing food and rations. According to the book, Hill was welcomed to his post by puddles of blood and a trail of blood. He later learned the former officer was stabbed to death.

Hill’s company was stationed near the DaNang helicopter and Air Force Base, providing protection. He said his company was involved in firefights with the Viet Cong every two or three weeks.

The book also details how the Viet Cong didn’t want to engage in full-blown firefights, but would place mortars on the nearby Monkey and Marble mountains.

“They formulated a method in which they would stretch a rubber band soaked in gasoline across the top of the shell,” the book states. “After about eight hours, the band deteriorated and the mortar would fire, sending men to the reinforced bunkers.”

The method didn’t often work, but at least one of the mortars killed several of the men in Hill’s company.

The book is available to checkout at the library.
