District celebrates EMS renovation

Posted

EVANSTON — “Today is a very good day,” said UCSD No. 1 Superintendent Ryan Thomas as the district and community celebrated the long-awaited completion of Evanston Middle School on Wednesday morning, Nov. 8. District officials, community members, representatives of the Wyoming School Facilities Commission, the Evanston Red Carpet Committee and EMS students gathered at the front of the school to watch Thomas cut the red ribbon.

Prior to the ribbon cutting, Thomas thanked members of the UCSD No. 1 school board and Wyoming School Facilities Division Southwest Regional Project Manager Lance Johnson. Thomas also acknowledged the vision of Dan Selleroli, previous facilities director for the district, who is now employed with Sweetwater School District No. 1 but was present for the ribbon cutting event. “Without the vision of Dan Selleroli, we wouldn’t have a college-size gym or an auditorium,” he said.

Acknowledgements were also given to current facilities director Jaraun Dennis, school district attorney Geoff Phillips, several other district staff members, and especially to the students and staff of Evanston Middle School, who have dealt with the last two years of renovations going on in their school. “The teachers have been amazing through this process,” said Thomas. “They have been burdened and frustrated, but the students have been patient and learning continued.”

Thomas said the EMS renovation was a 21.5-million-dollar investment and a project that began about seven years ago when the idea of pursuing a renovation instead of new construction was born. He said choosing that course allowed the district to keep a lot of the original wood structure, which he feels adds a lot to the aesthetics of the building.

EMS principal Eric Christenot said it was an exciting day for him as he prepared to lead district officials and members of the SFC on a tour to show off the facility following the ribbon cutting.

As he cut the ribbon and students cheered, blew horns and released balloons into the sky, Thomas said, “I hope we use the heck out of this school over the next 50 years.”
