COVID booster shots approved, available at drive-thru clinics

Posted

Uinta County Public Health released information about COVID-19 booster shots that have now been approved and are available for local residents. For individuals who received a Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, the following groups are now eligible for a booster shot at 6 months or more after their 2nd dose:

• 65 years and older

• Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings

• Age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions

• Age 18+ who work or live in high-risk settings

For those who got the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, booster shots are also recommended for those who are 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months ago.

Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose.

Public Health is planning drive-thru booster shot clinics the next two Thursdays (Oct. 28 and Nov. 4) at the Mountain View Fire Hall, and the next two Fridays (Oct. 29, Nov. 5) at the Bus Barn in Evanston.

Those eligible for and interested in receiving a booster are invited to register by going to the county website (www.uintacounty.com) or by calling the Public Health Offices (307-789-9203 in Evanston, or 307-787-3800 in Lyman.)

Appointment times will be scheduled and sent out via text and phone message the Tuesday prior to clinics.

Consent forms are available for download at www.uintacounty.com or for prior pickup outside of the Evanston Public Health office, at Benedict’s, and the Bridger Valley post offices. A consent form is required for each shot.

Additionally, the vaccination record card is required to receive a booster shot at these clinics. (If you have lost or damaged your card, call or come by Uinta County Public Health.)

A booster dose for Pfizer or Moderna is a third dose (half dose for Moderna, full dose for Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson) given 6 months following the second dose and is intended for those at higher risk of developing severe disease, including those 65 years and older and those with medical conditions that put them at higher risk, including asthma, lung disease, heart disease, kidney disease, obesity, etc. This list does not include all possible conditions that increase risk. Individuals are encouraged to talk to their healthcare provider about how to best manage the condition and protect from COVID-19. Additionally, people that work in high-risk settings (first responders, medical providers, corrections) are also eligible to receive a booster 6 months after their last dose.

Those younger than 65 and in good health, (and who do not work in high-risk settings) who received either Pfizer or Moderna are not eligible nor recommended to receive the booster as the 2-dose series remains effective and continues to offer strong protection against serious illness.

All adults who received Johnson and Johnson are eligible for a booster 2 months after the first shot, and they may choose another dose of J&J or may choose a booster of either Pfizer or Moderna.
