EVANSTON — This year’s Shop with a Cop, organized by the Evanston Peace Officer Association, marks the 27th year that local law enforcement has participated in the program, bringing holiday joy to many children and their families.

Dozens of uniformed officers from the Evanston Police Department, Uinta County Sheriff’s Office, and the Wyoming Highway Patrol showed up bright and early to accompany approximately 60 elementary-aged children and their guardians to a complimentary breakfast, provided by and served at the Hampton Inn.

Once participants were fed, they were treated to an opportunity to convoy to Walmart with officers in their vehicles, with lights and sirens blaring. This year, each child was allowed to spend $100 each, choosing their own gifts.

“Every officer contributes financially, and most are here today off duty.  The only cost to taxpayers is the use of the vehicles,” said Evanston Police Chief Mike Vranish.  “We don’t solicit for donations, but we receive them from local sponsors. Please be sure to thank them for us.”

The logistical efforts of EPD Records Clerk Janae Skillin and Evidence Custodian Kris Goble ensured a successful and seamless event. Many law enforcement spouses also volunteered their time, including handing out more than 40 meals donated by Smith’s and the Wyoming Hunger Initiative to participating families.

Sponsors for this year’s event include Spire, Evanston Baptist Church, Helping Heroes, Festival for Families, VFW Post 4280, Kathy Stacey, Betty Smith, Margaret Pearson, Wyoming Highway Patrol Association, Uinta County Peace Officers Association.
