EVANSTON — Marilee Jackson, member of the BEAR Project Board of Directors, opened the Memorial Tree Grove Ceremony and dedication of the new memorial on Saturday, Sept. 14, at the Bear River Greenway.
“This is the 20th year for our ceremony and we always are blessed with good weather,” Jackson said. “This is a great opportunity to remember those we have lost and celebrate their lives. The funding gained from these memorials in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department helps to build the walking trails and maintain the building and grounds here at the BEAR Ponds. Thank you for your support and for coming today.”
Jackson then introduced Rev. Pam Bright, who led the group in a memorial prayer. Following the prayer, Morgan Catron played her guitar and sang, “How Long Will I Love You?” written by Ellie Goulding.
Wyoming State Hospital Chaplain Cynthia Walker read the poem “When Great Trees Fall” by Maya Angelou.
Evanston Parks and Recreation District Director Scott Ehler and Jackson read the eight names placed on the memorial stones this year, including C.E. (Hi) Henrikson, Helen Henrikson, Bruce L. Miller, Shelly Walls, Cassie Harker, Barbara J. Troughton, Bonnie A. Deal and Michael L. Wiggam. As their loved one’s name was read, family and friends came forward to lay flowers on the new stone. The BEAR board provided the flowers and Jackson handed them out to each family that came forward.
When all the names had been read and the families were seated once again, Jackson played the prerecorded song “Lift Me Up” by the Celtic Women. This created a moment of silence and tears.
After the ceremony, the BEAR Board provided a brunch for the participants.
