Civic orchestra, chorus to hold fall concert

EVANSTON — The Evanston Civic Orchestra and Chorus invite the community to its free fall concert, “My Song in the Night: a Musical Journey of Faith, Fun and the Fantastic,” on Monday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., at Davis Middle School.

Celebrating the many facets of fall, from the fun and fantasy of Halloween, to faith, home and loved ones at Thanksgiving, the music of the chorus and orchestra portrays a great picture of what this season is.

Orchestra features include “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and the audience-favorite, “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” by Edvard Grieg. The chorus will entertain with Sam Pottle’s clever setting of Lewis Carroll’s nonsensical poem, “Jabberwocky,” as well as the familiar, “Coney Island Baby” and “Scarborough Fair.”

Several of the songs the chorus will sing remind one of home and loved ones. Crystal Roskelley-Delgado, who co-directs the chorus with Nathan Baxter, said, “Home can be interpreted in different ways for different people. It’s a place of warmth, safety, and love, but it’s not just a physical place. It’s a feeling, a place in your heart.”

Orchestra director Nick Harker, who is new to the organization this fall, has been impressed with the musicians from Evanston and the surrounding towns.

“I feel extremely blessed to have had the opportunity to work with this wonderful, dedicated, and hardworking orchestra,” Harker said. “There is a wonderful sense of community in Evanston, and everyone who attends the concert will be uplifted and benefit from the music.”

Roskelley-Delgado has had a similar experience with the chorus.

“We have a very talented and fun group of people in the chorus,” she said. “They are happy and a joy to work with. We’ve been working hard, and I’m excited for the concert.”
