EVANSTON — The agenda for the June 2 regular meeting of the Evanston City Council was very short, containing two requests for street closures, a parade permit, one motion and one resolution.

Councilman Mike Sellers congratulated the 2020 high school graduates. He also commented on the numbers of suicide in the nation and recently in our city, and asked people to be ready to help those in need and in danger of hurting themselves.

Councilman Evan Perkes and Mayor Kent Williams thanked the police force for keeping the community safe. Williams also said how much he appreciates the community of Evanston that rises above the chaos in the nation.

The two street closure permits were for neighborhood 4th of July block parties. Elijah Robinson’s request for closure on Sage Street between Lombard and Uinta streets from 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. was approved. Mark Potter’s request for a street closure on 7th Street between Lombard and Uinta streets from 4 p.m. until 11:59 p.m. was also approved.

Jim Davis requested a parade route permit for the annual All-Alumni Noise Parade on Saturday, July 4, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Uinta County Library parking lot and ending at Depot Square. The parade route was approved.

Under new business, a motion to award the bid for the summer 2020 street maintenance overlay project to the low bidder, Consolidated Paving and Concrete Inc., was addressed by Evanston Director of Engineering and Planning Dean Barker.

“This company has done a lot of work for us in the last couple of years,” Barker said. “The bid of $438,629.86 is well within our budget and gives us some room to work with. They will be doing work on Yellow Creek to Herschler and all of Cheyenne Drive.”

The motion to award the bid to Consolidated Paving and Concrete Inc. was approved unanimously.

Evanston Police Chief Jon Kirby addressed the last item on the agenda, which was Resolution 20-42. It would authorizing an application to obtain a partnership grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to use toward the purchase of bulletproof vests.

“We have utilized this grant for numerous years,” Kirby said, “and it will pay half of the cost of the six vests we’ve been approved for. If we get this grant, the officers will receive the vests at no cost to themselves.”

Resolution 20-42 was approved unanimously.

During public participation, Jon Pentz addressed the council. “I just want to thank the city for the work done on City View drive and also to thank law enforcement for all they do for us,” he said.
