Carlson finishes third at Junior NFR

Posted

Myles Carlson might have gotten unlucky.

And it might have cost him a world championship.

Carlson fell behind early in points after riding bareback on a horse that didn’t buck, but the Evanston native was able to rally in the later rounds to earn a third-place finish out of 35 riders in the senior division in early Dec. at the Junior National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

“I am (excited) but I think I could do better,” Carlson said. “I didn’t have that good of horses. My first horse ran. I had a good second horse and my short-go horse was decent.”

Carlson took 12th in his first go-around and won the second go-around. He took fifth in the short-go to finish third overall.

Carlson earned a spot at Wrangler Rodeo Arena in Las Vegas for his performance at the 2017 Northern State Qualifier on Oct. 27-28 at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs.

“I learned a lot from it,” Carlson said. “It was fun.”

During his time in Las Vegas, Carlson participated in autograph-signing sessions and met professional riders Ty Murray and Tim O’ Connell, among others.

“It was really cool, because I look up to all of them,” Carlson said. “It was amazing.”

Carlson sees himself riding at the professional ranks one day. That’s the goal, at least.

“It’s going to take a lot of hard work and practice to get there,” he said.

Carlson’s next competition will be held on New Year’s Eve in Rock Springs.

“This time I’m going to try to get ahead of the game and get a lead,” Carlson said.

Carlson currently leads the state in bareback riding in the Wyoming High School Rodeo Association. He won the bareback competition on Sept. 23-24 at the Wheatland rodeo and leads the state with 57.5 points — 32 more than Donny Proffit of Diamondville, who sits in second place.

The fall portion of the 2017-18 rodeo season ended on Sept. 24 in Wheatland, but points carry over to the spring season, which kicks off in April. The state high school rodeo finals are held the first weekend of June in Rock Springs and nationals takes place July 15 in Rock Spring.

“I want to stay ahead and win a state title,” Carlson said.

Carlson said he would like to thank his mom, dad, Scott, Waylon and Carlee for all their support and help. He also would like to thank his sponsors Triple 6 Shoeing, Iron Horse Construction, S Bar S Trucking, Wyoming Fabrication,  Flare Construction, R and R Rodeo, Debi Andersen, and Dr. Dillree, along with the World Championship Bareback and Saddle Bronc Association, and everyone else who has supported and helped him along the way.
