Buffs take 2nd at state track meet

Posted

The Mountain View Buffalos turned in a solid performance at the state track and field meet in Casper, totaling 71 points with their second-place finish, though the Star Valley Braves ran away with the 3A title, amassing 140 points.

A first or second-place result rewards a competitor or relay team an all-state designation. Three Buffs earned that distinction, with two outright champions and a pair of second-place finishes by another.

Senior Jonathan Anderson muscled his way to the top-spot in the shot put with a mark of 49-feet, five and one-half inches, notching ten points for his team with his 3A crown-winning performance.

Junior Mason Ozuna also added ten team points by besting all comers in the triple-jump. His 43-feet, one-half inch jump was almost two-feet better than second-best.  Mazuna tacked on two more points by landing in the seventh spot in the long-jump.

The third all-state competitor was sophomore Briggin Bluemel, who placed second in both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, adding 16 points to the Mountain View tally, while securing two all-state awards.

Travis Harmon placed fourth in the 3200-meter run and fifth in the 1600, worth nine team points.

Jason Stoddard contributed five points with a fourth-place triple-jump mark.

Sophomore Kimball Madsen gained 4 points on a fifth-place finish in the discus.

Freshman Ashton Schofield also elevated the Buff effort by four points with a fifth-place high-jump.

Another four points came by way of Harlan Benedict’s pole vault of 13 and one-half feet. Senior Brandon Vitt cleared 13 feet, good for sixth-place. The duo combined for eight team points.

In relay race competitions, the Buffs fared well with three fourth-place team efforts.

The foursome of Madsen, Ozuna, Schofield and Bluemel clocked in at 45.27 seconds in the 4x100-meter relay, notching five Buff points.

Stoddard and  Bluemel, teamed with junior Trenton Wells and Hunter Gross, notched another four points in the 4x400-meter race, as did the grouping of junior Justin Hamblin, senior Gabe Gardiner, Harmon and Wells in the 4x800-meter relay.

Sophomore Dustin Smith and freshmen Sam Porter and Luke Branson also qualified for and competed at the state meet.
