Board accepting applications for community trees

EVANSTON — Local businesses and residents of Evanston have an opportunity this spring to purchase discounted trees through the Community Forestry Planting Program offered in conjunction with Evanston’s status as part of Tree City USA.

Residents can purchase one tree, while businesses can purchase up to three, at a cost of $50 each. The trees are not mature but are large enough to be established within one year. Only individuals who reside in or businesses located within Evanston city limits are eligible to participate.

Recommended tree species include crabapple, chokecherry/plum, hawthorn, maple, evergreen, mountain ash, aspen, birch, honey locust, willow, hackberry, Norway maple, green ash, pine, linden and bur oak. Top soil and tree stakes are delivered along with the trees to promote establishment.

There is a limited number of trees available each year, so individuals and businesses who purchased a tree last year will be placed on a waiting list and will not be eligible to apply for a tree until all new applicants have had an opportunity to purchase one. There is no guarantee that those on the waiting list will receive a tree each year.

Applications may be turned in until mid-April. Trees will be delivered to purchasing homes and businesses in mid-June, and Parks Department staff will contact recipients to inform them of delivery dates and times.

Further information can be found on the Evanston Parks & Recreation website at www.evanstonparksandrec.org, under the Parks tab and Community Forestry. Applications to purchase trees are also available on the website, as well as at the Rec Center, City Hall, the Evanston City Public Works office or the Uinta County Library.

Applications are not complete until payment has been received.

For more information, contact Caroline at the Evanston Parks Department, (307) 789-2519 or cgoick@allwest.net.
