Big third quarter lifts Mountain View past Lyman

Buffalos bounce back from loss to Rawlins

LYMAN — It’s been a couple of years since the Mountain View boys’ basketball team earned a win against Lyman.

That changed on Saturday night.

Mountain View placed three players in double figures and scored 32 points in the third quarter en-route to a 67-46 conference win.

“I think that was a big win for the program,” Mountain View coach Dustin Rees said. “I think it’s been three or four years since we’ve been able to beat Lyman. That was a big hump we needed to get over to get where we want the program to go.”

Braeden Walk poured in 19 points, while Colby Rees and Brandon Vitt both scored 13. Kimball Madsen added nine for the Buffalos, who snapped a three-game skid.

“I think this win could get us going in the direction we need to go,” Dustin Rees said. “I think we have a lot of confidence leaving Lyman (Saturday night) with a victory. We need to keep it rolling. If we’re going to get on a roll, this is the time to do it.”

Lyman (1-8) started the contest in a triangle-and-two defense in an attempt to slow down the offensive fire power of Walk and Jason Stoddard. Mountain View (3-5) made an adjustment at halftime and it played dividends.

“Offensively we were just trying to set better screens for Walk and Stoddard so they could get better looks at the basket, and then we could all play after that,” Rees said.

Defensively, the Buffalos came alive in the third quarter, too.

“Our defense led to a lot of offensive opportunities,” Rees said. “We decided to trap everything we could in the half court and that led to a lot of turnovers, which led to some easy baskets and some transition 3s, and that’s something we really work on in practice.”

MOUNTAIN VIEW FALLS TO RAWLINS

MOUNTAIN VIEW — The Rawlins High School boys’ basketball team, the No. 2 team in the Coaches and Media Basketball poll released Dec. 20, claimed a 63-34 win on Friday night against Mountain View.

Stoddard led the Buffalos with nine points while Vitt added seven to lead Mountain View.

The Buffalos had not played since the Flaming Gorge Tournament on Dec. 16.
