EVANSTON — Unknown suspects are at large after stealing seven Polaris RZR side-by-sides from Basecamp Evanston early Saturday morning.

The vehicles, with a total value of about $226,000, were taken in two trips, with the four perpetrators stealing four vehicles at approximately 12:30 a.m., followed by another three at about 3 a.m., according to a Facebook post by Basecamp. The post reads, “They went through our locked gates, cut cables, tore out ignitions to start them and went up over the top towards Overthrust.”

On their second trip, the thieves attempted to steal an eighth vehicle, but failed to do so.

Basecamp general manager Colt Hamilton said the thieves removed the ignitions to replace them with their own.

“So they brought ignition modules for each machine, and they knew which ignition modules to bring…,” Hamilton told the Uinta County Herald. “They’re for different models.”

The vehicles were not equipped with any tracking devices.

The Facebook post asks anyone with information to let the police or Basecamp know, and implores anyone reading to share the post. The writer added, “Somebody knows or saw something.”

The post also indicates the Federal Bureau of Investigation is working on the case, and Basecamp is offering a $30,000 cash reward for any information leading to a conviction.

Hamilton said he does not have much information, but suspects the thieves are from Utah.

Hamilton and the Evanston Police Department confirmed the FBI’s involvement.

“We have been in contact with FBI,” EPD Lt. Ken Pearson told the Herald Monday morning. “… Obviously that’s still an active case.”

Hamilton said the video quality was poor, partially due to the thieves turning on the vehicles’ headlights, which blurred the images.
