The girls basketball team was home Thursday against the Green River Wolves in an important conference game.

Prior to this game, the Lady Red Devils were 3-2 in conference. Natrona leads the pack with a 5-0 record. Kelly Walsh and Evanston each were 3-2 but Evanston had lost to Kelly Walsh previously.

Green River would not be a pushover. Taylor Stoeger, the high scorer on Green Riverís team, would have to be reckoned with as would Hannah Hicks.

The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter but Stoeger was fairly quiet.

On the Evanston side of the ball, Emmery Wagstaff and Tayler Groll each scored from beyond the 3-point line and a field goal by Aspen Anderson gave the Red Devils eight points, matched by Green River with scores from Mallory Seymore, Hannah Hicks and Madeline Heiser.

With the scored tied at the end of the first quarter, Stoeger came alive and scored nine points in the second quarter. Emmery Wagstaff scored two field goals and two from the foul line for a total of six points in the second quarter. Anderson added another two and Megan Fisher scored one from the free throw line.

The Lady Red Devils scored nine points in the second quarter but the Wolves had 15 points. The half ended with the Lady Devils behind 23-17.

Wagstaff, Groll and Barker quickly closed the gap starting the third quarter. Each of the players scored field goals and made the score 28-27 in favor of Green River.

The Wolves scored again with a field goal from Ashelynne Birch but it was quickly answered by Barker. Toward the end of the third quarter, Ajahonna Archuleta scored two quick buckets to give the Lady Red Devils the lead, 29-28 going into the fourth quarter.

Except for one point from the foul line, the Lady Red Devils effectively shut down Taylor Stoegerís scoring, although she was playing well on defense. Aspen Anderson, who had been playing well, left the game mid-way through the third quarter due to foul trouble.

Emmery Wagstaff was the story in the fourth quarter. She had been doing an excellent job all night defending against Stoeger, keeping her scoring to a minimum but she also was a leading scorer for the night. In the fourth quarter Wagstaff scored eight points while Stoeger had five.

In the closing minutes of the game the Lady Red Devils were working the clock, trying to protect their 36-35 lead when Ajahonna sank one from just inside the 3-point line to make the score 38-35.

Stoeger was fouled after sinking a basket and added another point from the foul line. Tayler Groll had one point from a foul and then Wagstaff was fouled. She missed her shot but was given another opportunity when Green River was called for a lane violation. She scored one, making the score 40-38 in favor of Evanston.

The game ended with Evanston winning a much-needed conference game victory.
