Getting a taste Wednesday of what spring weather should look like for a track and field meet in late April, the Evanston High School track and field team welcomed seven teams from around the area for the Rick and Wendy Schuler Invitational at Kay Fackrell Stadium.

The Red Devils and Lady Devils took advantage of their only home meet of the season, combining to win 15 events, and getting some of the younger athletes on the roster some much-needed track time in front of their hometown fans.

“Midweek meets are usually a little bit smaller, so a lot of the time they’re focused more on the younger kids, the JV kids,” said EHS head coach Roy Barker. “Obviously, with it being our only home meet of the season, we put a lot of our kids in the events, so that they could compete in front of their friends and family – I think that’s important. We won quite a few events, and I’m very proud of what their marks were. The kids competed well, we had some great personal bests, we had some kids moving up the Top 10 lists and we had a couple of kids qualify for state. I was very pleased.”

Leading the charge for the Lady Devils was junior sprinter Talia Conrad, who won three individual events: The 100 meters (12.87), the 200 meters (26.32) and the 400 meters (59.58). Known primarily as a distance runner early in her track career, Conrad has had a breakout season as a sprinter this year.

“Talia’s not just the fastest girl we have on the team, she’s the fastest girl we’ve had in 10 years – since Mandi Anderson and Sarah Peterson and that group came through here,” Barker said. “Last year, we started playing with her in the 400 relay, and she was doing really well, and I think she hit a 61 in a relay split. So this year during indoor, we put her in the 200, just to see how she would do. She went out and crushed it, so we kept going at it. We put her in the 100 once we got to outdoor, and in her first 100, she runs like a 12.85, or something like that – just a phenomenal time. She’s really figuring it out, and I’m happy for her.”

Other winners on the girls side included Emma Lonsway in the 300 hurdles, whose time of 47.63 qualified her for state; Kiara Worthing in the triple jump (32 feet, 9 inches) and Jessica McMurtrey in the discus (106 feet, 11 inches).

For the boys, junior Kai Barker also won three individual events, finishing first in the 110 hurdles (15.70), the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and the triple jump (39 feet, 3.25 inches); he also qualified for state in the 300 hurdles, placing third, with a time of 41.05.

Other winners for the Red Devils included Gabe Hutchinson in the 100 meters (11.21) and the 400 meters (49.66) and Derek Parks in the 800 meters (2:01.34).

Juan Navarro finished runner-up in the 200 meters (23.23), while Paul Baxter was second in the 3200 meters (10:24.41).

“Gabe Hutchinson broke 50 in the 400, so that moved him up to second all-time in that event in Evanston,” Barker said. “Going down the line, I think our throwers are getting more consistent, which is really nice to see, and our distance runners are getting more consistent, as well. Derek Parks ran a great race in the 800 meters, and Paul Baxter ran a great two-mile. Aubrey Horrocks looks really, really good. Overall, it was just a really pleasing meet.”

This weekend, Barker and his staff are taking 45 athletes to the Davis Invitational in Kaysville, Utah. To compete at the Davis Invitational, an athlete has to hit a qualifying mark in his or her event; the meet is then broken up into an open division and a seeded division, which features the top athletes in each event.

“It’s a big meet, and they set some high standards to get into the meet,” Barker said. “To have that many of our kids in it, we’re really excited. This Saturday should be a great varsity meet for us, and we’re expecting good things.”
